Youngsters meet in the public space, chill out, have fun and argue. Youngsters (no matter how small the group is) are often seen as a problem because they would cause nuisance due to, among other things, the noise they produce and their behaviour. At the same time, youngsters are hardly involved in the design of public spaces. It seems double: youngsters are our future, but are considered a nuisance and often not understood or heard. There are still playgrounds everywhere for young children; the older youth has to make do with often little attractive hangouts.
Youngsters are a fully-fledged part of society and so they deserve their OWN PLACE in public space. First of all, we must ask ourselves who exactly those young people are, what motivates them. Find out why they hang out, where they like to meet and what they like to do. Then we gain insight into their specific needs and the public space can be tailored to this target group.
OUR PLACE offers all the elements to design the environment for young people in the outdoor space in an appropriate and appealing way.Not everyone is the same and has the same interests or needs. This also applies to young people. When you design the environment for different types of young people, it must be attractive for different types of people. Each of whom uses public space in his own way based on their own needs and preferences. Here we look at the 4 types of people (BSR®) translated into the characteristics and interests of the different types of young people: strivers, enjoyers, peace seekers and explorers. These different types of young people occur in every group. A place that is experienced as pleasant to stay by the individual types is automatically a place that is attractive to the entire group. The group reinforces and corrects each other. Teenagers educate each other. They learn and accept each other.

Less inconvenience and more social safety
“The choice for the layout of the space by and for youngsters, appears to be mainly motivated by its physical and social appearance. Safety and cosiness are central. A place where meeting, performing, discovering and relaxing or ‘hanging out’ are facilitated in a good and appealing way. A living room where there are no parents: OUR PLACE. ”
When you buy a house, in addition to all the amenities and the location of the house, you also look at what the house looks like. Does the architectural style appeal to you? This also applies to the place for youngsters. They spend a lot of time there, so the place must also be attractive to stay there; good quality, clean, whole and safe. No matter how sloppy and messy they can sometimes be, they are careful with their belongings and do not sit in a dirty place with their designer clothes or walk their expensive shoes through soggy or muddy soil. In addition, the facilities are also important. Both for being creative and show-off. But also those who just want to relax or chat with others should be able to enjoy themselves in the same outdoor space. When developing an OUR PLACE, the CPTED guidelines are applied both visually (what the place looks like) and practically (in the range of facilities).
