Want to get some fresh air? Play outside and exercise with your friends and enjoy the fresh air. We collect all kinds of outdoor play tips and tips for learning in motion that you can do at home or in the neighborhood.

Make sure that playing and exercising remain part of your daily routine; these outdoor play tips will help you with this!

Making a hopscotch

What could be more fun than learning the numbers while hopping? Find some crayons and write the numbers on the tiles yourself first. And then… hop on! And if you already know the numbers from 1 to 10, make it extra difficult with tens or another variant. Hopscotch is fun and educational!

The floor is lava (foot off the floor)

Play a game of ‘lift your feet’ or: the floor is lava. 1,2,3,4,5 …. And? Is everyone with their feet off the floor? Whoever is still on the floor is finished and whoever is left has won! If you have playground equipment nearby, that is of course great fun, otherwise you will really have to jump on a wall or climb into a lamppost. Live it up!

run like hell (321Start!)

First automate, then learn while moving outside! Your teacher or teacher will be proud of you! You not only learn topography from the computer, but also enjoy the outdoors! Place cards with country names scattered throughout the garden. Look for the right capitals. Are you able to find the right pairs together?

Also take a look at 321Start.nl for even more ideas for moving learning!

Look for creepy crawlies

Take a look in your own garden for what is crawling, flying and crawling through the grass and between the plants. You will still be surprised by what you see! A ladybug, for example, often hides between the leaves. But usually, when you find 1, you will find 1 more … and 1 more … How beautiful they are, right?

Take your sister to the playground

Are you lucky with a playground just around the corner? Go to the playground, for example with your big sister or brother. Of course mom or dad can also come along. Who knows, they may also go down the slide with you!

Start a shop

Start your own shop in the backyard. Your parents, brothers / sisters can do their shopping with you. If you don’t have a playhouse, build a hut, for example. You can sell anything in your shop, such as your crafts that you made that morning.

Counting bees

Always wanted to know how many types of hardworking buzzers you have in the backyard or on the balcony? Join the National Bee Census this weekend! Go to https://www.nederlandzoemt.nl/, look at the instructions, print the counting form and count …

Obstacle course in your own garden

Create an exciting obstacle course together in your own backyard. You can create your own challenging route through the garden with all kinds of materials and items. Who makes the longest obstacle course and keeps it from falling?

Carpentry

Assemble something yourself. You can make the most beautiful buildings with some planks and nails. Dad will probably want to help out too! For example, with the summer approaching you can make an insect hotel. This makes it extra cozy for the little bugs and insects in your garden!

Traffic lesson (321Start!)

At home you can also practice the traffic signs that you have learned. They are simply in your street! Go around the block with mom or dad and see which road signs you come across. Do you know what they mean and what kind of signs they are? Did you know that there are 5 types of road signs: You are not allowed here … / You must here … / Watch out … / Look, here is … / Priority signs.

Garden table tennis

Do you also like to play table tennis? You can also hold a table tennis match at home. Inside, but also outside. How? Ask your parents if you can use the garden table. If you don’t have table tennis bats, use your diary or a hardback book. Of course ask in advance if you can use it for your table tennis tournament 😉

Fractions Jump (321Start!)

Do fractions learn boring or difficult? Not really! Draw a long line on the ground. On the left is the 0 and on the other side the 1. Divide the line into 10 parts, 5 parts, 4 parts, etc. Then make jumps on the line of 1/10, 1/5, 1/4, etc. The longer the line, the bigger the jumps! Which fraction jump do you get the furthest?

Curbs

Curbs… Huh? What is that? Mom and Dad will probably still remember. A road (nice and wide, so you have to throw far), a curb on both sides, two children and a good bouncing ball. You don’t need more. And then try to throw the ball on the edge of the other side from a distance. If it bounces back, you can catch it and you have 1 point. If that does not work, it is the turn of the neighbor across the street. Or come up with a variant yourself… and throw it!

Where is that letter? - Spelling (321Start!)

Practice outside spelling? Of course that’s possible! Collect as many 6 letter words as possible, for example from your favorite book and write them down. Draw 6 circles, containing the numbers 1-6. Stand at the starting position and let your mom or dad name a word from the list, for example “Yippie”. Then the question comes: “Where is the letter… i? And where is the second letter i? ” Jump to the circles and back again. This game can of course also be played with words of more or less letters.

Measuring = Knowing (321Start!)

Throw a bean bag or bag of rice as far as you can! How far do you think you’ve thrown? 1 meter, 5 meters or even 10 meters? Make it extra difficult by throwing underhand, for example. With a tape measure (from the shed or garage) you can measure it in no time! Also fun to do together, we throw the furthest and how big is the difference? Of course, be careful not to throw the bag in the neighbors garden 😉

Table jumps (321Start!)

Look for a number of posts in a row in your neighborhood. With a sidewalk chalk or postits you can write down all kinds of table sums (on all sides of the pole). Pick a pole and a side, call the table, and jump while shouting the answer. Do this at all the posts you come across. Bet you will remember the answers to these sums tomorrow ?!

Planking Challenge (321Start!)

Start a sunny day with a “planking challenge” in your backyard. A what? A challenge to keep you on the ground like a plank for as long as possible. That seems easy, but it certainly is not. Lean on your elbows or on your hands (extra hard) and keep your body straight like a plank. Stay in this position for as long as possible. Which of the family will last the longest? Make it a competition and combine it with math or anything else you need to practice for school. Doing well!

Morning gymnastics

Start your day with morning gymnastics outside in the garden! Have someone else in the family be the PE teacher each time. This way you start the day nice and fit. A few ideas for class: take a stretch or jog at your place. 10 times with your left hand to your right foot and 10 vice versa. Did you know that you immediately do “braingym”? Because you cross the horizontal and vertical centerline, the left and right half of your brain are awakened, as it were, and also set in motion. Gym for your body and for your brain! Then some frog jumps in a row through the garden and croaking nice and hard! Your day can start 😉

Making driving duos (321Start!)

Practice rhyming words in the garden. With colored paper or postits you can make duos of words, for example “branch” and “bag” or “wall” and “fire”. Mum or dad pastes the words of one half of the duo in different places in the garden and you get the other words. Then you start looking for the other half of your duo. You can help each other a little, for example stick “wall” on a wall. Success and fun guaranteed!

Build a cabin

We have received this tip before: build a hut in your own garden! You can go a long way with branches, pegs and old sheets / blankets. Maybe your parents also allow you to use the garden furniture (just ask!). Build your own creations and invent your own game. Different every day!

Chores: wash windows

If mom and dad help you with your homework, you can of course also help them with chores from time to time. And when the sun is shining, a job in the garden, such as cleaning or cleaning the windows, is not bad at all. And just think of it: it is a win-win situation, because then you still have time together later in the day to play a game together … Good job!

Run like hell: end -d or -t (321Start!)

You often hear a -t but you write a -d, as with the word “horse”. A trick to help you with this: make it plural and see what you hear at the end (such as “horses”). Make a list of words with an end -t or end -d. Then you point to two places in your garden, one for the -t and one for the –d and mark them (with chalk or a piece of paper). Have Mom or Dad say the words from the list and run to where you think the word belongs and back again. How many words can you run together in a minute? You can tap the letters with your hand, but you can also turn it into a freerun track for extra challenge.

Toy party XXL

Is the weather nice to go outside, but would you like to play with your favorite indoor toys? Ask if you can have a toy party outside on a picnic blanket. Take your favorite Lego, Playmobil or dolls / cuddly toy / car collection all outside and play! Make up your own fantasy game. You will enjoy yourself! Bet that your parents will also come around the corner and would actually like to secretly join in? Invite them to your party, make nice invitations for example. That will be fun!

Memory: making pairs (321Start!)

Play memory outside instead of at the kitchen table. Find a place where no cars are driving and divide as many memory pairs as you want. Draw a starting line at a distance of 5 meters. Now take turns running to the tickets and look for a pair. If it works, you can keep it! If it hasn’t been done yet, run back to the starting position and it’s the next player’s turn. Who has the best short-term memory and can find the most couples?

Ice hockey training at home

Do you miss your sports club & training when you are at home? At home you can still reasonably keep your sports skills up to date for many sports (football, gymnastics, basketball, tennis), but that is not easy with every sport. What if you play ice hockey? These kids and their parents have come up with something very creative: with nylon plates and 2 pieces of wood they can still practice their Stick & Puck handling. This way you work on your technique and you can enjoy yourself outside! Do you also have such a creative solution for exercising outside in your garden, let us know!

Jump sums (321Start!)

Do you also love trampolining? You can let off steam on a trampoline! Practice jumping on and off the trampoline right away. This way you can kill two birds with one stone! You first practice the sums for yourself during your homework and later you have mom or dad quiz you. You then “jump” the answer in the number of jumps. But beware: it can get quite tiring if you are going to do it with multiplication sums, like the 9 or 10 times table 😉

Skating & Jogging

If you want to get away from it all, go skating together. Or mum / dad jogging and you skate. Choose a nice route together in advance, of course on a “good skate path” with not too many bumpy stones. Go around the block together and you will come back tired. Along the way you can also see if you can spot and count bears with the #berenjacht (ed. Bears with people in front of the window). With smaller kids you can of course also go for a walk with the family! For example, count the number of red cars, garden benches or garden gnomes you encounter. Nice to make a district bingo map!

To measure is to know: marbles (321Start!)

Ever played marbles? Did you know that there are many different types of marble games ?! In the past, every region or even every village had its own rules! So playing marbles has always been around … but still a lot of fun to do! There is even an NK Marbles in the Netherlands! How it works? You take turns throwing up a marble. Whoever has the marble closest to the marble pot, can start. Measure it with footsteps (for younger players) or with a tape measure. Measure the distance in cm and in m and calculate the differences. Then you try to shoot the marbles into the jar with your thumb and forefinger in turn. If it doesn’t work, then the next. The last one to shoot a marble in the jar wins all marbles in the jar. Who collects the most marbles? And who was the closest to the game? And who the furthest?

Also take a look at 321Start.nl for even more ideas for moving learning!

Craft cuddly toy

Cheer up someone else with a homemade paper hug! It also makes you very happy to make and give a craft hug. You need a large sheet of paper, nice colors of paint or pencils and nice feathers, stickers, glitter etc to decorate. Have your mom or dad outline you on the paper with your arms spread as if you were giving someone a hug. Then you color the hug and / or craft fun decorations. And your paper hug is ready! Put it in an envelope and send it to someone who could use a hug!

Doing chores: planting plants

There are always chores to do in the garden. Especially when spring comes, the garden also needs a summer jacket. There is always a job that can be done, for example planting new plants. It brightens up the garden completely and it is fun to do this together. So, give your parents a hand and plant a plant!

Do you know the time? (tell time - 321Start!)

Do you know the time? And that there are two different ways to display the time? With an analog clock with hands and numbers up to twelve o’clock and with a digital clock with only numbers (until 24:00). Pretty complicated. Let’s practice it outside. You need an analog clock and the numbers 1-10 on the ground. Enter a time on the analog clock, display it and say, for example, it is ten past two in the afternoon. Then jump the digital time to the ground in numbers including an initial 0 if necessary. So in this example you jump from 1 to 4, then you say “colon” and you jump to the 1 and finally to the 0. This way you jump outside through time!

Also take a look at 321Start.nl for even more ideas for moving learning!

Jump for seconds (321Start!)

Get some fresh air and jump rope! Grab a skipping rope and ask someone else to keep track of how long you can jump on the stopwatch or smartphone. Guess how long you jumped before checking the stopwatch. Can you make a good estimate of the time? And make the assignment a bit more difficult, for example with a cross jump or on 1 leg. And calculate the difference in seconds between the different assignments. Give it your own twist! Also a good assignment for mom and dad, now that the gyms are closed 😉

Also take a look at 321Start.nl for even more ideas for moving learning!

Step Up challenge

Hold a challenge in your backyard with your family. For example a Planking challenge or a Step Up challenge. The edge of the pond tray / flower box / garden bench or another elevation is perfect for a step up challenge. The higher the more intensive the challenge. Make it a competition of who can do the most step ups in 1 minute and keep moving!

Search your book - spelling (321Start!)

Do you know how to practice spelling too? With your favorite book! You can read a book of course, but there is much more to get out of your book! For example, practice writing and recognizing nouns and adjectives. How? You take your favorite book, for example a Donald Duck pocket. On a sheet of paper you make two columns where you will write words later. You put your book away. The idea is that you run to your book every time and look for nouns and adjectives in your book. When you find 1, run back to write it on the piece of paper. You start at the sheet of paper… .321… Start! Who can find and write down as many words as possible in 10 minutes?

Would you like to know more about learning in motion? Visit 321start.nl for more information.

Doing chores: bicycle maintenance

Would you also like to help dad with odd jobs? There are always chores to do. If you want to go cycling with the family, it is nice if your bike is all right and your tires are inflated. Your bike can always use a service. Check if your light is on and if your bell is still ringing properly. And ask if you can inflate the tires of the bikes. Then you will soon go like a rocket!

Word Match - Compositions (321Start!)

Do you know what a composition is? First try to write down as many combinations as possible, two nouns that together form one word. Then you “chop” all the words loose and write them on separate postits. Shuffle them together. Have mom or dad stick half of the words across the garden. The other half are the assignments. Now try to find the sets together again. Very nice if the words also have a link with something you can find in your garden. Do you find all match words, or all combinations?

Prepare your vegetable garden for summer

Is your vegetable garden ready for summer? In mid-May, you can put the young plants that you have grown indoors outside in your vegetable garden, but a lot has to be done before then! First it is important to remove all weeds from the vegetable garden and prepare the soil. You can supplement with new vegetable garden soil and plant seeds in advance. You can probably help mom and dad to make your vegetable garden completely summer ready. And it is also nice to follow your ‘vegetable garden project’ from seed to plant! Do not forget to plant flowers, then you will make the bees and insects in your garden happy too!
