The outdoor space at the petting zoo of ASVZ De Merwebolder has been redesigned and made more accessible for all clients of the care institution. In addition to a brightly coloured new playground, a traffic square, animal enclosure, new landscaping and planting, new greenery and planting has been created. And a pike spot with a reading throne to get together. A wonderful place for all residents and their supervisors to enjoy the outdoors and keep moving. For the design of the outdoor space and the choice of playground equipment, a play design from BOERplay has been chosen.
Design concept for care & well-being
People with disabilities live at this location of ASVZ. Young and old, light and severely intellectually limited. For all these people, ASVZ offers the necessary care and guidance. And they play in or use the outside space of the care institution independently or under supervision. We have designed the design in such a way that everyone at the Merwebolder, with or with a disability, from young to old, can play or stay together or only outdoors. We use a design concept specifically aimed at care and well-being: Playing Together, especially for inclusive play. For example, there can be extensive play together, there are motion equipment and educational elements. But you can also relax or help out at the animal enclosure. Everything for optimal play, learning, recreation, exercise and togetherness.
Play design
The custom outdoor space has been redecorated and zoning has been installed in the design, based on play value and function. With a selection of brightly coloured play equipment from the Basic Play range in a colour scheme specially executed for the Merwebolder. Safety, education and accessibility are the spearheads of the design. With a large number of inclusive playground equipment. For example, there is a family swing ‘flying carpet’, a wheelchair merry-go-round and a wobbly bridge where you can also match a wheelchair. The game tables (checkers and man-worse-you-not) are also suitable for taking a seat with a wheelchair. And along the route you will discover various game panels and feel walls. The surface has become part of the playground by installing a traffic square with lines and applying brightly colored elements in the artificial grass.
Landscaping
The surroundings at the Merwebolder are characterized by lots of greenery and tree parts. This was also taken into account in the design and sought connection with the existing greenery. For example, a Robinia wooden pergola and a willow tunnel have been built and the surroundings have also been taken into account during the new planting. Another example is the seat with reading throne. It is located in a green area of the grounds under fairytale trees. The landscaping and maintenance are provided by the colleagues of sister company VISSERgroen.
Social role
For the design of this outdoor space, we mainly looked at what the wishes and needs are from the users of the environment. Not to what the limitations are, but rather to the possibilities that play elements and furniture offer. So that as many clients and children from the surrounding residential areas as possible can make use of this outdoor garden and it becomes a place where people come together and enjoy. With this, this outdoor space fulfils a social function and that is also what makes this project so special. We are extremely proud to be part of the creation and realization of this outdoor garden.
