Working together on a new outdoor space
For the municipality of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, it is important that children have plenty of opportunities to play, exercise, move and explore outdoors. That is why the municipality invests in renewing and improving playgrounds in public spaces, including the playground at Nibbelinkstraat.
Ideas from the neighbourhood shape the design
When designing a playground, several aspects play an important role:
- safety
- accessibility
- sustainability
- sufficient play value for different age groups
In addition, the municipality wanted the renewed area to match the wishes and needs of the neighbourhood.
For that reason, a community participation process was organised through BOERplay. Residents were given the opportunity to actively contribute ideas for the design of the playground. Through an online project page, local residents could share their ideas, wishes and points of attention. Based on this input, we developed several design proposals.
The designs were then presented online once again, after which residents were invited to participate by voting for their favourite design. This resulted in a playground that fits both the surroundings and the wishes of the neighbourhood. The renewed playground at Nibbelinkstraat has now become a welcoming meeting place where play, movement and social interaction come together. Because residents were actively involved throughout the process, the area now creates a sense of recognition, engagement and connection within the neighbourhood.

A playground that brings people together
