What if you have both a playground and a neighborhood vegetable garden on your wish list? Residents of Espel wanted both. And so it was that a playground was opened in Espel! In this way, different target groups from the village can meet each other in a natural way and also make joint use of the space. Smart use of space with something for everyone!
Central meeting place
At the end of 2015, the idea was born to realize a central playground in the new residential area of Espel. Over time, the original idea was expanded and a playground committee started up. It had to become a meeting place for several generations, where both young and old can enjoy themselves. Children who are challenged to play freely and naturally. With various natural playground equipment and a central vegetable garden that is maintained by local residents. So actually a playground vegetable garden! With the cooperation of many volunteers and companies from the Espel area, a design by Speelplan and the layout with playground equipment from BOERplay, a great space has been created.
Liveability and togetherness
The playground garden includes a slope slide, bird’s nest swing, various climbing equipment and a 25-meter cable car. Furthermore, a football field, cross track, stilt path and large sandpit. Insect hotels and a natural wall have been constructed. The play and discovery spot is intended for all ages. Use was made of mainly natural materials, including wood chips and play elements made of 100% FSC® Robinia wood from the Adventure Play range of BOERplay. A natural water gutter with water pump has also been installed. The mons playground contributes to the quality of life and solidarity in Espel both through the collaboration that preceded the realization and through its multifunctional use. The maintenance of the garden is done by parents and other villagers. They have gathered in a whatsapp group. With the realization of the mons playground, Espel shows, among other things, how great the village’s independence is.
Opening playground garden
On Saturday, April 7, 2018, the mons playground in Espel was officially opened under the watchful eye of a large audience and a radiant sun. The opening was done by Fleur Knook and Milou Eiling, who together came up with the appropriate name “Heel Espel Speelt”. They unveiled the sign at the entrance with the name and logos of the various subsidy providers and other companies that carried out the various activities.
