Just south of Utrecht (The Netherlands), in the middle of the Schalkwijk polder, lies the brand-new farm of Elmar and Egberdien Hogendoorn. For years, they dreamed of creating a place where farm life and the experience of nature could be brought closer to the public. Not just an ordinary farm, but an experience farm that bridges the gap between farmers and citizens. And with such a concept, a play and activity area for young and old was of course a natural addition.
Even before the first foundation post was placed, our adviser, Berdi Viveen, was asked to help think through the outdoor space. The brief was clear: a play area with equipment for various age groups, a sporty challenge for older children and adults, and a look and feel that perfectly matches the rural character of the grounds. Robinia wood therefore became the basis for all the equipment—robust, natural and perfectly suited to the farm. The play area also needed to be located near the café, so parents could relax while their children played. The grounds surrounding the farm offered ample space to bring these wishes to life. For younger children, we designed a versatile natural play area full of opportunities to explore and move. Here, children can climb, slide, swing, balance, seesaw, crawl and imagine. With such a variety of play values, there is always something new to discover. For older children and adults, we designed an exciting obstacle course. The equipment challenges users to test their speed, strength and teamwork. Besides being great fun, the course is also the perfect setting for sporty activities, training sessions or team-building events. This creates a dynamic space where everyone can burn off their energy. Today, the play area is already in full use. Children are introduced to farm life in a playful way, while parents relax on the terrace or pick up fresh products from the farm shop. The place is lively and vibrant, perfectly reflecting what Experience Farm BUITEN stands for: enjoying the outdoors together, staying active and experiencing authentic farm life.Adventurous play in a rural setting
