In the new residential area of Am Medembogen in Otterndorf (Germany), a sustainable play area has been created at a unique location. The municipality of Land Hadeln issued a tender with a focus on sustainability, low-maintenance materials, and a modern look. With our design and careful execution, we have transformed a former car park into an inclusive and inviting play area for children of all ages.
Community involvement
The design of the play area was centred around the wishes of the residents. Prior to the project, the client created a survey where children could share their ideas. This input was valuable in determining the play values and the final design. The result is a space where children from 0 to 12 years old, including children with disabilities, can play and explore together.
From design to execution
The former car park had a hardened and compacted surface with a lot of rubble. For the transformation, we took care of the installation of the play equipment, extensive groundwork, drainage installation, planting, turfing, and fencing. Everything was executed with a focus on sustainability and preserving the natural environment. Our expertise in low-maintenance planting played a key role in this process.
Sustainable and accessible play equipment
The new play area was designed to make the neighbourhood in Otterndorf more attractive and provide a central gathering spot. Here, children can play freely, and residents can meet one another. Our advisor Rainer Thomsen guided the project from the design phase.

The design deliberately selected play equipment made from recycled plastic, aluminium, and steel. These materials are sustainable, low-maintenance, and resistant to various weather conditions. A key focus of the play area is accessibility: a wheelchair-friendly roundabout has been installed, and the pathways are designed so that children and carers in wheelchairs can easily access the different play zones.
A play area for the future
Thanks to the thoughtful choice of materials and inclusive design, this play area is a valuable addition to the neighbourhood. It’s a place where children can play freely and residents can meet one another. This transformation demonstrates how a simple space, with the right vision and execution, can become a vibrant and meaningful place for the community.
