That outdoor play contributes to children’s motor and cognitive development is something we’ve known for a while. And that it helps prevent nearsightedness, we recently wrote about in our blog. But did you know that playing outside in nature can also help prevent asthma and allergies? In this blog, we explain how it works.
A large-scale Finnish study, conducted between 2008 and 2018 by Tari Haahtela from the University of Helsinki, shows that children who frequently play outdoors in green environments—among grass, trees, mud, and water—develop a stronger immune system. Their skin flora becomes more diverse, making them more resistant to allergies and asthma. But how does this work? Our immune system develops through exposure to various microorganisms. In an overly sterile environment, which we increasingly see in modern cities and indoor spaces, the immune system receives fewer stimuli and becomes overactive to harmless substances like pollen or dust. This can lead to allergies and asthma symptoms. By playing outside and coming into contact with natural bacteria and fungi, the body learns to distinguish between harmful and harmless substances. The more biodiversity a child is surrounded by, the stronger their immune system becomes. Many play areas consist of tiles and rubber surfaces, but these contribute little to healthy development. A playground full of grass, sand, plants, and water promotes more biodiversity and more play enjoyment. Children who play in a natural environment explore more, move more, and simultaneously build their immune system. Additionally, research shows that contact with nature reduces stress and contributes to better concentration and mental health in children. In Finland, experiments were conducted in various cities where schoolyards were made greener. Within just one month, children who regularly played in these green play areas showed an increase in protective microorganisms on their skin and improved immunity. This proves that even small adjustments to the play environment can have a major impact on children’s health. The research in Finland is not an isolated case. The Longfonds’ international study on preventing asthma in children also emphasizes the importance of microorganisms for a stronger immune system. Immunologist Hermelijn Smits, coordinator of this research, states: ‘We had a slightly different research question. In Finland, the focus was primarily on nature and biodiversity. We look at how contact with microorganisms helps prevent asthma. But the great thing is that the findings align. They reinforce each other. Because where do you find the greatest amount of microorganisms? In nature.’ These studies highlight how important a green, diverse play environment is for children. Whether it’s a large forest or just the schoolyard around the corner, every green space makes a difference. By making schoolyards and playgrounds greener, we give children the opportunity to experience the benefits of biodiversity every day. At BOERplay, we understand that playing in nature is essential for health and, above all, a lot of fun. That’s why we design play areas with natural elements such as tree trunks, hills, rain gardens, and sand play areas. We collaborate with schools, municipalities, and childcare centers to green play areas and create a healthy play environment. Sustainable materials and designs play a major role in our mission. We use ecologically responsible materials, promote biodiversity in play environments, and encourage play forms that challenge both physically and cognitively. This way, we help children grow up healthily while also contributing to a more sustainable world. Do you want to give children a healthy start? Choose playgrounds with plenty of greenery, encourage outdoor play, and let them get a little dirty! At BOERplay, we contribute to a healthy start by designing play areas where children can explore, move, and strengthen their immune systems. Want to learn more about the possibilities for your playground or schoolyard? Our advisors are ready to help and brainstorm with you. Together, we can create a healthy green play area where children can develop to their fullest potential.Outdoor play and the immune system: why a little dirt helps
